Henry Cock, running with a new narrative...

Updated: Jul 22

We all know that I love inspiring people! I love to write about them, they are the reason I have an inspirations page on my website and they remind me of two things.

1. Why I started this blog

2. That people are inherently good.

So when my best friend (who’s pretty inspiring herself) put her wine down and with great gusto said, “You have to write about this guy I went to varsity with!” 🍷 I was Intrigued, I listened to her summary and asked her to send some info.

When I actually did the reading I was blown away. She was right. I have to write about this guy!!!! He’s marvelous!

In 2020 Henry Cock, like so many others had to close his restaurant doors during lockdown. The spin off of which, was his staff and their families losing much needed income. On the back of the financial strain and personal stressors, he suffered from anxiety and depression. Needing to act, he launched an outlandish fundraiser. He would run the distance of the Comrades -90km- in his home, up and down his passage in the hopes of raising R80 000,00 to pay his staff. He did it! And he raised R120 000,00. Omg! Yeeeesss!!!! I could end this post here. But wait, theres more...

Come 2021 and he’s at it again and this time he’s running for me, my brother, some of our friends, cousins, aunts and uncles. This time he is running for more than 4% of the world population!!!! 🏃‍♂️

Henry will complete 133 half marathons in as many days, covering a total of 2 800km and breaking the men’s Guinness World Record for the most consecutive half marathons run.

Why is he headed from Kozi Bay to Namibia? To raise awareness and try break the stigma around mental health. He also aims to raise an impressive R6 million for SADAG. How incredible? If all of this isn’t inspiring enough, there are hundreds of volunteers running along side Henry as witnesses of his epic feat! What a show of Ubuntu in these wired and weird times.

With the covid pandemic engendering an alarming increase in mental health issues, Henry‘s highlighting a very real, very relevant topic. He is the embodiment of Be the Light! Thankfully, because there is no way my body was going even 28 km 😂 (not yet). Enough with the fear and the whispering, let’s talk about it!

Today he is 295.4km and R559 238 in and he needs all the support we can give him. So share, share, share!!!

Henry, as someone who has been there and can really relate, I say YEEESSSS MAAAAAAANNN!!!!!!!!! LIGHT THE WAY!!!!! 💡

What a time to be mentally aweh!!!!!!
